PRESS RELEASE

Duane Skarda of Skarda Farms

Named 2009 Iowa Seedstock Producer of the Year

Duane Skarda of Skarda Farms, Afton, Iowa, has been named as Iowa’s Seedstock Producer of the Year.  The coveted award, sponsored annually by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council, is being awarded to Duane Skarda on Monday, February 9, 2009 at the Expo Kick-Off Program; which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the cattle barn foyer at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.  All friends of Duane Skarda and the Iowa Beef Expo are invited to attend.
The Seedstock Producer of the Year is a coveted award among Iowa’s Purebred breeders.  The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding cattle producers in the seedstock industry.  Each Purebred Breed Association is given the opportunity to nominate one candidate for the award.  Applications are reviewed by a Seedstock Committee, which gives careful consideration to producers programs in their entirety, including record keeping, industry participation and leadership, merchandising programs, selection criteria and herd improvement over time.
Duane Skarda has been in the Seedstock cattle business for 54 years raising Angus cattle.  Skarda Farms run Angus cows as well as some commercial cows and have kept performance records for 20 years.  Though most of the cattle are sold Private Treaty, Skarda Farms offers 3 to 4 yearling bulls and a female each year at the Iowa Beef Expo.  Skarda Farms breeds most of their cows on natural heats.  Their goal is to use EPD’s and pedigrees to stress low birth weight, explosive growth and easy fleshing ability.  Skarda Farms wants their calves to get up and grow for them as well as their customers.
Leadership positions that Duane has been involved with include being a 4-H leader in Union County, Extension Council Member in Union County.  He has also been an Iowa Angus Director – Iowa Southern, President of Taylor County and Iowa Southern Angus Associations, Union County Fair Board Member and Union County Cattlemen Director.  Duane has received the Union County Cattlemen of the Year award, Union County Master Cattlemen, 4-H 3rd Individual Livestock Judging Iowa State Fair, and Angus Heifer Award winner at the Iowa State Fair.  Duane has had much success in livestock expositions, he was awarded 3rd Judging State Fair, has had 5 Iowa Beef Expo Grand Champion Bulls, 2 Reserves and 2 Grand Champion Iowa Beef Expo Heifers along with 3 High Sellers at the Iowa Beef Expo.  Skarda Farms has exhibited 4 4-H Grand Champion Heifers, 2 4-H Reserve Grand Champion Heifers, Reserve Champion Steer at the National Junior Angus Show, Champion Steer at the Nebraska State Fair and Champion Market Heifer at the Kansas City Royal.

In his own words here is a brief historical review of his seedstock operation:
At my first county fair 4-H show, I stood next to last in class with my steer.  I decided then I needed to make some changes.  I was more interested in heifers than steers so in the fall my dad, Richard, and I bought my first registered Angus heifer.  Also, as a result of my 4-H accomplishments and Angus records, I was selected for the Angus Award Heifer at the Iowa State Fair.  Those two females got me started and their descendants are still in our herd.
In our first trip to the Iowa State Angus Show and Sale in 1968, we had Champion Bull.  Now called the Iowa Beef Expo and 40 years later, we had Champion Bull again.  This calf was sired by a bull we raised making it extra special.
We decided showing cattle was a great way to advertise our offerings.  Our children and grandchildren showed at county, district, state and national levels.  They met a lot of great people and created friendships of a lifetime along the way.  In twelve years they were fortunate to receive many awards.
Through our Angus cattle we have met a lot of great people, done hours of visiting and made a good living.  We will continue our basic routine and never be satisfied, striving to get better and to be respected by our fellow cattlemen and, as in the beginning, make a few changes as needed.
